Pink Bathroom Decorating Ideas

PK: The response has been fabulous. My pink bathroom campaign has been featured in all kinds of media, including The New York Times and scores of online sites. It’s just a topic that makes people smile. Most importantly, I have many emails and story follow-ups from folks who tell me my plan worked. That is, they kind of hated their pink bathroom, went online to look for alternatives to redecorate or rip it out, but then they discovered the colorful history of pink bathrooms and came around full circle to loving their pink bathroom. Now they would never dream of ripping it out. I also hear from lots of people who are looking to buy midcentury houses, and an original pink bathroom is on their wish list. It’s all about education!

Pam Kueber: I have always been a lover of vintage homes and decor, but vintage pink bathrooms were not much in my consciousness…until they were. I’ve been blogging at RetroRenovation.com for more than eight years. Once I started communicating daily with other people living in post-war houses, I started to notice just how common pink bathrooms were. That led me to start researching the subject. Pretty quickly, I learned from a knowledgeable reader that the particular shade of pink so common in 1950s bathrooms had been given the colloquial names “Mamie Pink” and “First Lady Pink.” First Lady Mamie Eisenhower had loved the color so much that she used it throughout the White House — so much so that the press corps called it “The Pink Palace.” Pink bathrooms have a colorful — yes, I’d even say important — history within American interior design!

MAMIE PINK: The iconic decorating color of the 50s, arguably. Ubiquitous in fashion as well as bathrooms and kitchens. The mid-century trend to pink seems to have come directly and irrefutably from Mamie Eisenhower, first lady from 1953 to 1961. Pink was Mamie’s favorite color. She wore a pink gown with 2,000 pink rhinestones to…

All about texture: For this look, Kate found a vintage wallpaper design from Hannah’s Treasures that reads as more of a texture than a pattern. There is no pink in this wallpaper; however, there is black present in the print as well as grey, white and gold, which are all neutral, easy to work with colors. The green color in the wallpaper is a complementary color of pink — red and green are complementary colors, and pink is technically light red. Since complementary colors ‘play nicely’ together, the green works with the pink. To ensure that the green looks cohesive in the space, Kate repeated it in the green towels and solid green shower curtain, which still has a textural look due to the stitching pattern on the fabric. She then added pink towels to further repeat the pink.

Purple power: This bathroom design feels very modern and colorful. By starting with this bold flower patterned shower curtain, which like the black tile, highly contrasts the light pink tile and contains other saturated hues like red and purple, we set the stage for a bold space. Turn up the pink power some more by getting hot pink towels that match the hot pink flowers in the shower curtain and by choosing a bold reddish purple for the walls, which gives the bathroom an energetic feel. Who needs coffee after showering in this bathroom?

PK: I believe that pink was the most popular color for bathroom tile in the 1950s. I estimate that pink bathrooms went into some five million American homes, maybe even 10 million. Before 2008, though, when I launched SaveThePinkBathrooms.com, pink bathrooms didn’t get much respect. Mind you, this was even before the Mad Men phenomenon, which also helped bring a real spotlight to the beauty in midcentury interior design. Recognizing the lack of scholarship about pink bathrooms, I thought it would be productive — and fun! — to call out the topic on its own little website. SaveThePinkBathrooms.com serves as a rallying point to call attention to how wonderful pink bathrooms really are, educating people about their history, and in the process, maybe helping to convince them to think twice before ripping them out.

In this bathroom, the different hues of pink make the space pop. The chandelier is made from pale pink milk glass, while bolder colors of pink make up the rug. The salmon colored bathtub, which is the statement piece of this space, is accented by pink floral wall curtains that tie all of these shades of pink together.

I have a 1953 pink bathroom with the identical shade of pink tiles, but the bull nose tiles are the same color of pink. The floor is a pink , white and gray hexagonal tile. Do you think some of these ideas would still work or do I need the black tile to pull the look together?

I know we are not voting, but if I were, I would choose the funky flamingos board. I like the simple look. The pink and orange flamingo shower curtain was a great find. All look great and I am sure a lot of people with pink and black baths will appreciate this post and find inspiration. The pink and black bath at our kids house–it has to go– space will become a mudroom. So… no pink and black bath decorating decisions for us.

Glamorlux Nancy was one of the first Retro Renovation readers to show off a vintage pink bathroom that she had embraced wholeheartedly. Her theme: Pink poodles, how appropros. “Two years ago,” she says, “when we were house-hunting, the pink bathroom (and other original 50’s features) is what sold us on this particular home!” Her bathroom…

If you think pink is a *limited* color, think pink again. At World of Tile — a time capsule tile store that we discovered in Springfield, N.J. — but which is now closed — I counted 95 colors of vintage pink bathroom replacement tile. See our Bathroom Help / Tile category on RetroRenovation.com for suggestions…

Flamingo day-glo: The second flamingo curtain — a black curtain with light and hot pink flamingos and neon green palm trees — feels wild, so for the wall color choice, Kate turned up the intensity and chose an almost neon light lime green. This color helps repeat the green from the palm trees. And again, we see the complementary color scheme of pink and green. Light pink and hot pink towels — colors taken straight from the shower curtain — finish off the room.

If you’ve ever stepped into an American home built in the 1940s or ‘50s, we’re pretty sure we know what you saw: pink bathrooms. And we’re not just talking about a simple coat of rose quartz. We’re talking pink tile walls and flooring, pink tubs and even pink toilets.

Along with the bright green rug, it tones down the overall color palette and takes the focus off the oh-so-pink tile. In fact, it turns the tile into something worth embracing. By the way, pink tile gets a bad rap. It’s very embraceable; it just served as the poster child for dated bathroom decor for a while. Check out these fabulous pink bathrooms embraced by Houzzers.
